A Day in the Life: Michelle Maylene
Once upon a time, about 25 years ago, a lonely, homesick U.S. serviceman stationed in the Philippines went to a strip joint. There he met a local dancer, a woman of great beauty. Instantly smitten, the serviceman became a regular patron. Love followed, and ultimately the American proposed marriage. The gorgeous dancer accepted; the newlyweds headed back to the States, and—settling down on a military base in Southern California— they had a child.
Unfortunately, Michelle Maylene’s parents soon split up. Her mother married a guy who owned a club featuring male exotic dancers à la Chippendales. The co-parenting plan was for young Michelle to shuttle back and forth between the strip club and Edwards Air Force Base. Attention Kmart shoppers: It once seemed a safe bet that Michelle was destined to be a lifetime cashier, but nothing’s ever certain.
Flash-forward: Michelle Maylene, all grown up, is now a regular on Cinemax’s smash hit Co-Ed Confidential, a wellreviewed, sex-saturated sitcom loosely based on the movie Animal House. The Rrated series just finished its fourth season of production, and Michelle’s been lead character Karen since episode one. “I have fans all over the world,” Michelle tells me proudly. “Not a day goes by where I don’t get recognized in a restaurant, a grocery story or someplace. And to be honest, every time it happens, it still shocks me.”
No wonder. “I didn’t grow up in an environment where I had the benefit of supportive parents,” Michelle recalls. “As a kid, I never thought I could be an entertainer. Coming from my background, it was inconceivable.”
How did the product of a broken home—the blue-collar child of a Filipina stripper and a U.S. serviceman—end up a rising star with such a bright future? She owes it all to fucking.
“I discovered sex early in high school,” Michelle reveals with a sly smile. “I was basically unsupervised since 15, so I was pretty wild. As a junior in high school, I had a 27-year-old boyfriend who was a male dancer and also in the porn business. That’s how I got the idea to get into porn.”
The original plan was to only do sex scenes with her boyfriend, and he would faithfully do the same. (Ah, the innocence of youth.)
The boyfriend introduced Michelle to the right people, and shortly after her 18th birthday— while still a senior in high school—she started working in the adult industry. “I used to sign myself out of classes early and go to porn shoots,” Michelle confides. “I told all my friends what I was doing, and they were really excited for me. But before I knew it, everybody in the school found out what I was up to.” Michelle chuckles at the memory of neighborhood guys, mainly servicemen, coming to the school and asking her to autograph the box covers of porn flicks featuring the ribald student.
Yes, Michelle has the unique distinction of being the first—if not only—class president of her high school to also be a XXX performer. “I was making my speech at graduation,” she recalls with a laugh. “I was in the middle of talking about growing up and becoming responsible when someone shouted out, ‘She’s a porn star! Show us your tits!’ ”
Michelle mentions that her “free-spirited” mom was pleased when she discovered her daughter was an adult performer. And the petite hottie brags about how fantastic it was to have all that extra cash back when she was in the 12th grade. Does Michelle want me to believe it was wonderful to be a teenager from a small town, on her own, barely out of high school, with no family paying any attention to her as she sucked off her male-stripper boyfriend on camera to put food on the table? “I can’t believe you weren’t a bit freaked out about how your life was going,” I say gently.
Busted! At least that’s how I read the expression on Michelle’s face as she reacts to my comment. But I’m not her shrink. There certainly isn’t any need to share deep psychological scars with a virtual stranger.
“It took me a while to take in what was going on in my life,” Michelle continues, choosing her words carefully. “Things were happening so fast.”
Like her porn boyfriend lying to her about being faithful. Like the ensuing break-up and Michelle’s decision to have multiple sex partners, on- and off-camera. Like doing 90 hard-core movies, one after another, seriously filthy stuff that included Teen Fuck Holes #5 and Young Asian Cookies Dripping Cum #6. Like crossing the line from neighborhood bad girl to world-famous slut who gets pummeled by more cocks in a month than most women could imagine in a lifetime.
Michelle managed to find a way to release some of the stress in her life: bowling. That’s right. Bowling. (It certainly wouldn’t be intercourse. At least until Co-Ed Confidential came along, that was her day job.) The actress absolutely adores the sport, swearing by its therapeutic effects.
“I was never a very good bowler as a kid,” she admits. “I rediscovered it as an adult while on a shoot in a bowling alley. One of the guys on the crew gave me some lessons, and I was a natural. I try to go every week. It really, really relaxes me.”

I accompany Michelle to the Lucky Strike Lanes in Hollywood for a couple of games. In between frames she tells me about the man who changed her life’s direction: soap opera actor Marcus Patrick. “I thought I was going to be a porn actress full time,” Michelle explains as she prepares to roll her first ball. “And then Marcus and I started to go out. I would always run lines with him for his soap opera, and he used to say to me, ‘I think you’re really good. You can do more.’”
Marcus introduced Michelle to his agent, who thought she had a naturally comedic quality. Before long, Michelle was heading to her first mainstream audition— for the role of Karen in Co-Ed Confidential. “I booked the lead!” Michelle exclaims, still relishing the accomplishment.
“I was lucky that the character was very much like me. She loves boys, loves sex and has a dominant personality. B u t I’m definitely not as mean as her.” Michelle and Marcus eventually parted company— she doesn’t date actors anymore, finding the competitive business too stressful on a relationship— but she is forever grateful. Thanks to Co- Ed Confidential, she’s making good money, and there’s a lot less wear and tear on her body. But most importantly, Michelle has learned something about herself: “I discovered that I could entertain without having actual sex. I started to have more confidence in my skills as an actress.”
Those skills are paying off in a big way. Michelle works so well with her fellow actors that the producers let her direct an episode. And her eminently fuckable, genuinely funny and endearing TV character has led to lots of personal appearance gigs, ad work and a steady stream of mainstream auditions.
I roll a ball, which steadily drifts to the right as it scoots down the alley. “The movie roles I get offered still require some nudity, and the TV roles are small guest spots in sitcoms,” Michelle explains, shaking her head sympathetically as my ball drops into the gutter. “But I’m fine with that. I just want an opportunity to show people what I can do. And of course, I still love getting naked!”
That provokes the question. Will Michelle Maylene resume doing hard-core porn? Another long pause from Michelle, who clearly wants to field this question delicately. “I would never totally turn my back on porn,” she says. “If the right offer came along, I’d have to consider it. The point is, I’m open. I’m into directing and acting, and I’d like to get into producing as well. Maybe more soft-core, maybe a hit TV show on a network. I’m not opposed to doing it all.”
In the meantime Michelle once again grabs her bowling ball and sends it expertly down the alley. As the pins fly, she turns to me with a devilish grin. She’s just picked up what I had assumed was an impossible spare. If anybody can do it all, I say to myself, this girl has a shot.
